Latest Case Study on the CP961® Multi

In a recent project undertaken at a UK hospital fitting the CP961® Multi was instrumental in achieving a net saving in energy costs of more than £8 400 in the first year, that is after all costs were recovered, therefore the saving for year 2 is predicted to be in excess of £20 000.

The busy hospital, built in the 1930’s, had been expanded regularly to cope with growing throughput so, with rising energy costs, and a greater focus on their carbon footprint, they enlisted the help of Water Management Solutions UK. Their comprehensive study found that the hospital, typical of such buildings, had taps averaging a flow rate of 14 ltrs/min and showers using up to 18 ltrs/min. They found similar levels of wastage in W/C toilets and urinals. Within a package of water and energy saving solutions the Cottam and Preedy CP961® Multi was the most extensive. WMS UK Ltd specified a total of 482 CP961® Multi’s (with a 6 ltrs/min flow regulating cartridge) underneath taps and showers. The CP961 is a simple isolation valve but with a flow regulator in the ball. A range of individual flow regulator cartridges can be inserted through a service port before or after installation without the need for system drain-down. The valve saves water by regulating the water supply to a constant flow with the added benefit of saving energy by reducing the amount of hot water needed. In many commercial applications the CP961® Multi also solves problems caused by high, low, or varying pressure. According to the hospital’s own figures their saving in water was 8 100 m³ in their first year with a third of this being heated water meaning a saving of £21 034 and a annual reduction in CO² emissions of more than 27 tonnes. So with the figures clearly speaking for themselves why isn’t everyone fitting the CP961® Multi? Actually the CP961® Multi is specified in many new commercial building projects and it is listed on the Water Technology List for DEFRA’s Enhanced Capital Allowance Scheme. It has also been awarded the Waterwise Marque. However the government in producing the new Code for Sustainable Homes seems to be focusing its attention on taps and showers rather than the less glamorous valve. It will be interesting to see in what direction new building regulations point. The CP961® Multi is a low cost solution to water saving and with the facility to retro-fit different flow regulating cartridges in situ; it provides a future proof answer should building regulations change.
